FLOODTRAIN – From knowledge to action:

empowerment and training of floodplain restoration managers

What is FLOODTRAIN?

Floodplains play a key role in flood protection, biodiversity and climate resilience. Yet many are degradedand restoration is often complex. Success depends not only on knowledge, but on the ability to apply it under real conditions.

FLOODTRAIN is a European project that develops a certified training programme for professionals working in floodplain restoration. It connects research, policy and practice to support large-scale ecosystem recovery.

What FLOODTRAIN offers

FLOODTRAIN brings together scientific knowledge, practical experience and stakeholder input. This is translated into a structured training programme that supports professionals in planning and implementing floodplain restoration. The project combines real case studies, practical tools and applied methods. It is designed to support decision-making in complex restoration contexts and to strengthen professional capacity across Europe.

Join the FLOODTRAIN Stakeholder Excursion to the Danube Restoration Site

As part of FLOODTRAIN, we invite stakeholders to a unique field excursion to the MERLIN restoration site along the Danube east of Vienna on 22 September 2026.

During this visit, participants will explore restoration measures implemented to reconnect and restore riverbanks and floodplain habitats, gaining first-hand insights into the opportunities and challenges of floodplain restoration in practice. The excursion will provide an opportunity to discuss restoration planning, implementation and long-term management directly at the site with experts and fellow stakeholders.

The excursion is designed for practitioners, river basin managers, public authorities, NGOs, researchers and anyone interested in advancing floodplain restoration across Europe.

Details will follow after registration.

Places are limited to 10 participants and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
